Richmond Hill is butterfly-friendly! This year, over 200 households in Richmond Hill planted native wildflowers as well as two 4.5 metre-long canoe gardens filled with plants to encourage butterflies to visit. Supporting the effort, The David Suzuki Foundation and the City of Richmond Hill partnered to provide flats of pollinator-attracting native wildflowers to local households. The citizen-led movement to bring butterflies and bees back is a Canada-wide effort that is paying off. After suffering a decline, the number of monarch butterflies has increased thanks to people planting milkweed and other plants.
