Winter solstice marks the transition between fall and winter, traditionally a time for celebration. This year, in Richmond Hill, the longest night of the year takes on a Finnish flavour with a unique event at 19 Church Street South at 7 p.m. Bring a candle as well as fruit and nuts to fill a “solstice boat” for the animals and birds, a Finnish custom that will take you outdoors to honour nature on this special evening. Traditionally, a solstice boat was a tiny birchbark canoe filled with food and hung on a tree, along with candles to light up the darkest time of the year.
