Once upon a time, so many beautiful roses grew in Richmond Hill greenhouses that the area was dubbed Canada’s rose capital and became a thriving centre for horticulture. In 1914, Richmond Hill-grown roses took first prize at the prestigious International Rose Show in New York City. More prize-winning roses cultivated in Richmond Hill were flown to Ottawa for the Queen during the 1939 royal visit. This Saturday, January 18, explore the Coming Up Roses exhibit from 10 am to 4 pm at the Richmond Hill Heritage Centre, 19 Church Street North. It’s guaranteed to chase away those winter blues! The Richmond Hill Heritage Centre is only a 10- minute drive from Avenue Towns.
