If close up views of Mars intrigue you, head to the David Dunlap Observatory just a short drive from The Avenue. Every Saturday, visitors can watch the largest telescope in Canada being operated, star gaze with telescopes on the observatory lawn and listen to a guest speaker talk about astronomy. Once a month on Sundays, tours offer a glimpse into the property’s fascinating history. A designated Richmond Hill historic site, most of the observatory and the neoclassically designed administration building with its Corinthian columns and marbled, compass-inlaid foyer is just as it was in the 1930s. Of particular interest is the observatory’s 61-foot English-built dome. The 80-tonne dome was transported from England to Canada by ship in 1933.
