Something sweet’s atop the Hillcrest Mall just steps from The Avenue.  For the second year, the mall roof is home to some very busy beehives. The first hives arrived last year and produced 400 jars of honey which were given away to shoppers and a women’s shelter. This year, the 20,000 strong bee population should swell to 70,000 by summer’s end, resulting in lots more jars of honey and more pollinated plants in the area. Keeping bees on the roof is meant to raise awareness about the plight of this vital pollinator. As well as interest from shoppers, local schools have become involved, creating lesson plans around the hives. Last year, the Ontario Beekeepers Association reported a 50 per cent drop in honey production. Kudos to Hillcrest Mall for making a difference!
